Bystanders
Bystanders
2026
Aluminium, light, acrylic, resin, UV print on cellulose acetate, concrete
Variable dimensions
Bystanders is a series of utilitarian street lamps inspired by those found throughout Singapore’s neighbourhoods. Across the lamps, flying termites, also known as swarmers, gather around the light. Their numbers gradually increasing before thinning out again as visitors move through the space.
Drawn instinctively towards light, the swarmers become both subjects of gathering and lingering, echoing the movements of passers-by within the tunnel. We are drawn towards certain places, people and moments, often without knowing exactly why. As visitors pass beneath the lamps and observe the swarmers above them, the line between observer and the observed begins to blur.
