Comfortable (Esplanade Drive) revisits the artist's work, Comfortable, first presented at Starch, Singapore in 2022. Comfortable (Esplanade Drive) is an extension of an ongoing curiosity of the relationship between architecture, light and memory. Developed specifically for the Esplanade Tunnel, the two-channel projection imagines sunlight passing through the site's mosaic glass panels, casting shifting reflections across the surrounding walls.
Rather than documenting an existing phenomenon, the work proposes an alternative projection. While the tunnel is ordinarily illuminated by reflections from passing car headlights, the projected image of the work envisions what the space might become if sunlight were its source of illumination. Positioned between observation and speculation, the work gently transforms a familiar public environment through a subtle reimagining of its everyday rhythms.
Comfortable (Esplanade Drive) preserves an ephemeral condition of light as a way of reflecting on time, place and perception. By imagining a familiar space otherwise, the work invites viewers to reconsider how ordinary environments accumulate meaning through repeated encounters, and how quiet acts of attention can reshape our relationship to the places we inhabit.
