One Odd Railing

Neighbourhood: Buangkok

One Odd Railing is a series of images that examines an odd railing along the PCN path at Buangkok Drive Blk 557. A tree had fallen and destroyed the railing, but the original design could not be replaced. One odd railing was installed in the midst of a long row of identical railings, now leaving a mark in the space that simply sits against order and maintenance. The black-and-white images were created by hand-processing 16mm reversal film, using eco-developer made of ferns and leaves collected from trees at the site of the railing. The colour image was created through inkjet print transfer on paper which was then stained with developer solution. A tactile conversation between image and site unfolds through interventions in texture, time and biology.

BACKYARD explores the phenomenon of how events become news. This collection of reports seeks to create a spatial tapestry of “news” contributed by artists living in different parts of Singapore. By inviting them to document the happenings within their neighbourhoods within specific windows of time, BACKYARD presents artists’ documentations as news reports spanning across 12 months. Each report contributes to a year-long narrative map of Singapore, positioning the artist as reporter. BACKYARD is an art space that takes place in the form of dossiers containing news reports by Singapore based artists.
